Don't Lock Africa Into Poverty Rally Let's talk about Economic Partnership Agreements....boring, right? EPAs are basically trade deals which the European Union makes collectively with other (often smaller and poorer) countries. On top of that, often these deals have all kinds of nice strings and conditions attached to them, such as requirements to sell water and electricity supplies to private companies, to stop subsidising certain industries, to open up markets. Those are all pretty major decisions for any economy, and the EU, being pretty large and powerful, is in a good position to make sure these deals go in their favour. In this particular case, the EU, the nice guys that they are, have been blackmailing devoping countries into accepting these deals, threatening to cut off aid, setting stupidly tight deadlines which don't give the developing countries enough time to consider the impact of the deal, along with all kinds of ruthless tricks. If it was a gangster movie, you'd secretly be grinning at the sheer audacity, brutality and utter shamelessness of these guys and what they were getting away with. And so that's how we ended up at the Embassy of the Germans in London (they currently hold the EU's rotating presidency), as well as lobbying each of the individual members of the EU. Without further ado, here are my pics from the visit to the embassy of Cyprus. 8 photos |

Portsmouth, 6th April The tower isn't all as great as the good people of Portsmouth make it out to be.That said, not a bad day out either. All I'm saying is, and don't get me wrong here, I'm not being pedantic, but if you want to see what Portsmouth looks like, then Google Earth is far, far better.... 16 photos |
