"Welcome! I'm an Oxford History & Politics graduate looking to develop a career in political communications. I also work as a freelance web designer.
When I have spare time, I write about politics,
post-environmentalism, travel and art
Having built the first incarnation of the UK Youth Climate Coalition website for them back in 2008, I returned to the project in 2010 in order to give it a much needed reboot.
The growth of the organisation and an increasing public profile meant that there was a need for a more flexible design, able to handle larger quantities of static content as well as regular blog posts. It was also important that the layout could be easily adjusted in order to highlight selected news items and to retain freshness over time without large amounts of technical expertise.
In addition, the team were keen to have opportunities to get involved clearly signposted in order to attract greater involvement from potential volunteers and donors.
The resulting site involved a complete re-build of the site design, whilst continuing its use of the popular and easy-to-use WordPress content management system. The design itself was built using the BlueprintCSS framework, and made heavy use of WordPress widgets in order to retain flexibility.
Features such as ‘megadropdown’ menus, a specific ‘get involved’ menu in the middle of the page, and an ‘opportunities’ scroller at the bottom ensured that the client’s need for flexibility and usability were met.
